No stadium, venue or arena ownership group wants to be known for all the wrong reasons. With all that’s been happening, no venue wants to end up facing a lawsuit or litigation in the event an adverse situation occurs at their respective venue. It goes without saying that an educated fan is a safe one. It essentially comes down to education and understanding. Teams can ban fans' indefinity and/or revoke a fan's season’s tickets. As a result of fan violence situations, the NBA can bar fans from attending future events in the event a fan does refuse to follow designated venue rules. Team sites also include a list of prohibited items that are restricted from being brought to the venue. Fans must adhere to team and league Codes of Conducts. With most recent events, the NBA, for example, has stepped up its fan violence policies by spreading the message via social media platforms and team sites. Staff should be well versed in alcohol beverage control programs-ABC, verbal de-escalation-treating people with dignity and respect, empathy and proactively engaged listening skills, emotional intelligence, situational awareness, threat and behavioral analysis, active shooter/assailant, pandemic/infectious disease planning, vehicles utilized as weapons, responsible social media monitoring, errant drones, inclement/severe weather scenarios, cyber/IT, and workplace violence scenarios. In addition, with respect to Covid-19 implications, they must ensure that proper pandemic planning, procedures, and protocols are put in place.įurthermore, properly trained venue security staff are constantly on the lookout for intoxicated, unruly, belligerent fans creating unsafe/hostile situations inside stadiums, venues, and arenas. The most recent spike in fan violence-related incidents is concerning on many levels.įirstly, today’s sport venue risk managers have what is known in the Industry as an entrusted duty of care to provide fans, athletes, staff, and contractors a safe and secure sporting experience. Due to the ever-evolving threat continuum, reducing and/or mitigating risk-preventing bad things from happening is a 24/7/365 days a year process. Without question, today’s sports and entertainment industry is a multi-billion-dollar juggernaut.
